Catalan Language
The Catalan language (català in Catalan, catalán in Spanish and Occitan) is a Romance language derived from Latin and spoken in Catalonia, eastern Andorra, the Balearic Islands, Valencia (where it is known as Valencià), the Franja de Ponent and Roussillon in southern France, northern Algeria and western Sardinia. Catalan is a co-official language of Andorra, and a minority language in Spain, France and Italy. It has semi-official status (with Spanish) in the Aran Valley region of southern Catalonia. It is also spoken by a small number of immigrant communities in other parts of Spain, as well as to some extent in Italy. In this respect Catalan differs from most other languages with a distinct native regional variant (such as Basque or Galician).
